MEET YOUR COLORRIST

NICHOLAS ORRIS

Davinci Resolve Colorist

Experiencing color is a fascinating phenomenon. I noticed how my films needed that "Cinematic" look and my studies lead me into this technical craft of color grading. Color has a profound impact on the perception of images, and managing the color signal from capture sensor to final screen is now a deep passion of mine!

Why Equipment Matters

  • EVERY SCREEN LOOKS DIFFERENT

    • Images change depending on the sceen your using- so seeing an accurate signal from a 10bit Color Monitor ensure you know how your image will look upon delivery.

  • EFFICIENCY IS KING

    • Post takes up time, so utilizing high end CPUs & Control Panels allows for nuance and speed with quality assets.

  • EVERY DETAIL COUNTS

    • 4k & Color Accurate Displays help ensure details aren't overlooked, and delivery matches your intentions.

Working with a Colorist

It all starts with the vision for the piece. What style do you have in mind? What examples can you show?

With some test clips I design a few "Looks" and share those for you to preview and choose between.

Sometimes we don't know what the film / commercial could look or feel like until we try, so some active experimentation can help uncover what the right approach for a piece to ensure it creates the intended effect!

How Finishing

Elevates a Project

FINISHING is the art of using specialized tools and techniques to develop the RAW elements of a video into RICH & REFINED images and sounds to enhance the final viewers' experience.

Through COLOR GRADING we match & master the images to have a particular "look & feel". There is much science and theory on the effect of color and contrast on our emotions, and un-natural color/light shifts take viewers out of the experience. Utilizing this knowledge and our technical understanding of Digital Image Signal Chain, we craft our images to create a desired effect, and overall beautiful final product!

Similarly, with AUDIO MASTERING a technician brings forth the sounds we intend to hear, then creates a pleasing sonic space to house those critical audio elements. Video is 60% Audio. What makes a good piece is consistent engagement through smooth audio quality that never distracts from the experience and adds emotion through appropriate usage of Natural Soundscapes, Spoken Words & Music.

DISCOVER MOODS THROUGH COLOR GRADING

Subtle (or drastic) changes in color imply a time/space to our minds. What is the mood or timespace of your scene? How different should it feel from other scenes while still being a part of a whole?

In this example video - we showcase how the same scene or series of shots can have a drastically different feeling. Is it a romantic winter evening or a hot summer afternoon? Is that a haunted forest or a depressing rainy day?
